10 Winter Events & Activities in Kansas City

Don’t stay cooped up all winter! Check out these local KCMO things to do this season.

Kansas City is a fantastic place to call home all year round. Don’t take our word for it, though! Check out one of these fantastic winter events and see for yourself!

1.       Mavericks

What’s a more perfect winter sporting event than to go to a hockey game? Get your tickets and head over to the Silverstein Eye Centers Arena to cheer on Kansas City’s own Mavericks! Proud ECHL affiliate of NHL’s Calgary Flames and AHL’s Stockton Heat, the Mavs were founded in 2009 and made playoffs appearances in six of their first seven seasons!

2.       Chiefs

Hockey not really your thing? Then cheer on the Kansas City Chiefs this December as they finish up the season! Pregame at a tailgate then watch the Chiefs play at Arrowhead Stadium. The stadium also offers tours (including game day tours!), so don your favorite Chiefs jersey and get your tickets today before the season is over!

3.       Quality Hill Playhouse

Okay, we get it. Not everyone is into sports or going outside during the winter. Maybe you want to add some class and culture to your winter. If that sounds more like you, check out Quality Hill Playhouse in downtown KCMO. With six musicals and cabaret revues each year, Quality Hill Playhouse is brining professional singers to their relaxed yet elegant atmosphere to create an experience you won’t find anywhere else.

4.       Downtown Dazzle

We have a special connection to this month-long holiday celebration, because Summit on Quality Hill was featured in the Urban Homes Tour! Check out some of our previous Facebook and Instagram posts for more on that! Downtown Dazzle was started in 2013 and offers holiday fun from Thanksgiving to the end of December, bringing together KC natives and visitors to explore downtown KCMO with a wide variety of events, activities, and other seasonal experiences.

5.       The Roastarie

What’s better on a cold winter day than a nice, warm cup of coffee? You may not think of Kansas City as a hub of gourmet coffee, but the Roastarie is out to change that! Check out their website for a more in-depth look into their history and mission, and while you’re there take a look at their Factory Tour hours, coffee classes, and cupping (tasting) opportunities.

6.       Festival of Lights

There’s no way to think of the holiday season and not picture lights of some sort. At the Powell Gardens Festival of Lights, the team of horticulturists take the idea of a holiday lights display and create something truly magical. Starting at the garden entrance, the botanically-themed displays wind through six or the seven themed gardens for a mile of wonder. You can also enjoy free family-friendly activities every day from 4-8 PM.

7.       Winterfest

If you’ve been in Kansas City for an amount of time, there’s a good chance you’re familiar with Worlds of Fun. The amusement park is a great place to take the family in the warmer months to enjoy the rides, shows, and events, but it’s also a great place to go during the holiday season when the park is transformed for Winterfest! Holiday-themed activities, shows, and other attractions are fun for the whole family, and they still have select rides open as well! Check out their website for event details and other information.

8.       NYE Live!

Easily the biggest New Year’s Eve party in Kansas City, NYE Live! has been running for over a decade and offers a fantastic way to celebrate the new year. Located in the Power & Light District, you can get exclusive access to a dozen bars and nightclubs, plus all-inclusive packages and experience other NYE classics like party favors, confetti cannons, and a ball drop! Get your tickets today!

9.       Crown Center

Right in the heart of KCMO, Crown Center has tons to do year round. As with many places, it’s even more wonderful during the holiday season. From the Ice Terrace to holiday-themed events in addition to the shopping options, Crown Center is definitely the place to be no matter how cold it may be outside.

10.   KC Restaurant Week

Usually held in January, KC Restaurant Week is an annual event you won’t want to miss. Every year restaurants from all over Kansas City and the surrounding area participate, offering limited multi-course lunch and dinner menus for $15 and $33, respectively. If you’re wanting to try out a new type of cuisine, or just want to have an excuse to not cook for a week, this is your chance!
